Chapter 14

All questions swirling in and out of Sarah’s mind vanished as the Ice Man, Commander Kemper, slapped something onto Logan’s wrist and pressed a button. The cuffs looked like the ones Sarah liked to use. Only these had a few more buttons and were black instead of silver.

Kemper pressed a button, and a time slip opened. Unlike where Sarah sent Crenshaw into a holding cell with bars, this place had vibrant blue energy streams like the ones produced in the transponder room when tourists arrived. Only these energy streams formed a similar containment area.

The energetic vibration sucked Logan out of the warehouse and into the holding cell.

“Tell me you know where that room is.” Sarah yanked the glasses off her face as the aggravation and anger seeped through her core. She stomped over to where Logan had stashed the other portion of the paper and pulled it out. She unfolded it. Drops of Logan’s blood were smeared in the corner.

“I know it,” Foster answered, his voice full of resignation.

Sarah’s heart clenched tight. The paper that Logan had hidden contained a list of numbers. She took a picture with her cell before handing it to Foster. “Does this mean anything to you?”

He stared at the paper, and the corners of his mouth slid into a frown. “How in the hell….”

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Sarah answered.

“We can’t stay here.” Foster punched a few buttons into his biofeed before grabbing her hand and pulling her through.

The familiar smell of forest surrounded her. The cabin where she’d first met Foster sat just through the trees.

“What were those numbers?” she asked, tilting her head and watching the hesitation play across his face.

“I....just can’t tell you.” A shadow passed by the window, blocking the light inside. “And you can’t tell anyone about me, the doctor, or what you saw. This is so much bigger than just Emma and the other witnesses.”

“You said you worked with Kemper,” Sarah said, taking a step back. “That means you aren’t from my time either.”

Foster dropped his gaze. “No.”

“How did you get here? I haven’t seen a report on you or Kemper, and our machine is the only vehicle for time travel.”

“Our aim was to arrive unnoticed,” Foster said.

“That doesn’t answer my question. Who sent you, and how in the hell did you get here?”

“I’m afraid I can’t tell you that. It could change things and do more damage. Sarah, trust me. I know it’s not in your nature, but just this once, trust a stranger to have your best interest.”

“I don’t know you.” She shook her head. The only thing that mattered was getting Emma and Logan back alive, fixing the destruction at the compound, and finding the witnesses to protect them. Accomplishing those things would uncomplicate Sarah’s life. “Where is the holding cell, and what do those numbers mean?”

“I can’t tell you. Not yet. I can’t risk you’ll go storm the place to get him out. We need to do this right before more people get hurt.
